The Power of Strengths: How to Bring More of Your Superpowers to Work

Are you bringing your best strengths to your work? Everyone has unique strengths, whether they are technical skills, interpersonal abilities, or creative talents. Leveraging your strengths can lead to higher productivity, better job satisfaction, and a more positive work environment. Here are three ways to bring your best strengths to work and leverage them to create positive outcomes.

1. Self-Awareness – Know your superpowers

The first step in bringing your strengths to work is to be aware of what they are. The people we coach are talented and driven. Yet many are not fully aware of their natural strengths. Like breathing, we sometimes don’t think much about the things we do without much effort. Finding your strengths requires self-reflection and possibly feedback from colleagues, mentors, or supervisors.

Take time to identify what you excel at and what activities make you feel energized and fulfilled. Tools like personality assessments or strength-finding exercises can be helpful.

Once you have a clear understanding of the one or two things you do really well, you can be more strategic in how you deploy them. For example, if you are particularly good at problem-solving, seek out projects that require innovative solutions. If you are good at persuasively articulating ideas, look for opportunities to make your voice heard more often.

2. Align your strengths with your long-term goals

To effectively leverage your strengths, align them with your professional goals and the objectives of your organization. Don’t seek out jobs that other people are good at – seek out positions that you will be great at! If you shy away from details, but thrive on ideation, you may not be a great project manager. You may, however, be an excellent innovator or strategist.

By aligning your strengths with your goals, you create a win-win situation where your work is both fulfilling and impactful.

3. Keep improving and refining

Strengths are not static; they can be refined and enhanced over time. Engage in continuous learning and seek out opportunities to refine and expand your skills. This might involve taking courses, attending workshops, or seeking mentorship. Additionally, be open to feedback and willing to adapt your strengths to different contexts and challenges. For example, if you are skilled in project management, you might adapt your approach to different types of projects or teams.

4. Leverage your strengths in every assignment

Integrate your strengths into your daily workflow. Start by identifying tasks that align with your strengths and prioritize them. If you don’t have work that utilizes your strengths, ask for it in future assignments. Seek out projects that allow you to showcase your abilities.

Bringing your best strengths to work involves self-awareness, aligning strengths with goals, and continuous development. By consistently applying your strengths in an intentional way, you will not only make a larger contribution, but also have more fulfillment in your work!
